Tech Topics August 6, 2019 – Dawn Hardy, dhardy@rollins.com, Ext. 4607
The next Tech Topics Training will broadcast live on Tuesday August 6, 2019. This month’s topic is, Commensal Rodents: If We Provide, They Will Come. These courses are approved for CEU credits in many states and will air on Tempo at 7, 8 and 10 a.m. EST. All forms are available on Scout and myOrkin.Technical Briefs – Glen Ramsey, gramsey1@rollins.com, Ext. 6090
Technical briefs are a way to assist training at your branch meetings. These one page briefs can be used by the Branch Manager or one of their technicians to lead a weekly training session. The sixth issue is on Ant Control and is available on Scout and myOrkin. Feedback or topic ideas for future issues can be sent to Glen Ramsey.Back to School Safety Message—Dale Vestal, dvestal@Rollins.com, Ext. 6136
It’s the time of year when parents and children across the country are preparing to go back to school. As part of Rollins’ commitment to safety, we would like to help with your preparations by offering some safety tips, which are located on myOrkin and Scout.Safety Photo of the Week: Fire Extinguisher—Bill Vargo, bvargo@Rollins.com, Ext. 2271
OSHA regulations state all portable fire extinguishers must be properly mounted and identified so they are easily and readily accessible. They must also be visually inspected monthly? Don’t forget to document the inspection on the inspection tag.RollinsONE

Small Fly Service Guidelines
Rollins Technical ServicesIntroduction
Small flies are insects belonging to the order Diptera, the true flies. Like all true flies, they only have two wings. Worldwide, there are an estimated one million different species, but in the US there are about 17,000. There are three families that are of top concern due to their ability to develop quickly both outside and inside structures:
- Drosophilidae (vinegar / red and dark eyed fruit flies)
- Psychodidae (moth flies)
- Phoridae (Phorid / humpback / scuttle flies)
Small fly pests are commonly found developing in and near buildings and can pose a significant concern, both aesthetically and with regard to public health, when they are found inside structures. All of these flies need moist, humid conditions with a buildup of organic material to complete their lifecycle.
These conditions conducive can be challenging to locate as these flies can thrive in drains and other hidden areas. Additionally, a thin film of food (decaying organic matter) can lead to small fly infestations in both residential and commercial buildings. Small flies can develop from egg to adult in as little as seven days if conditions are ideal.
Small fly integrated pest management (IPM) stresses eliminating the conditions which may lead to infestation and preventing them from either becoming worse or happening in the first place. The buildup of garbage, decaying organic matter, and grease, in combination with moisture, can lead to a small fly infestation. In commercial settings, a small fly infestation can lead to the loss of business, food preparation surface contamination, and even regulatory action.
As with any IPM program, all tools should be evaluated and assessed for both their potential risk and control program impact. Pesticides can control adult flies that are visible but rarely get to the immature stages, which means more flies when those immatures emerge. To effectively eliminate a small fly population, it is imperative to remove all breeding sites and food sources.
Sanitation is critical in removing food sources / breeding sites and regular cleaning will greatly improve the efficacy of any treatments. However, sanitation via regular cleaning might not be successful in removing food sources, which are not readily accessible such as in drains, hard to reach surfaces, and in other areas where there is organic material buildup. One way to do this is to use biological cleaners (i.e., Orkin Actizyme Floor & Drain Cleaner, OE30, or Invade BioCleaner from Rockwell Labs).
These products contain microbes and enzymes that break down the organic material (through bioremediation) needed by the flies, and makes the material more easily flushed during cleaning. While not technically a control program, it is an excellent tool in helping to reduce or eliminate the breeding source for most small fly infestations, thus reducing their numbers. In addition, since many sites will have the ongoing issue of organic material accumulating in drains and other areas, a regularly scheduled treatment may also prevent other pests such as cockroaches from consuming these potential food sources.
When using these biological cleaners, other control products such as Boractin and Nibor-D can be tank mixed with insect growth regulator (IGR) formulations like NyGuard IGR Concentrate and Tekko Pro IGR Concentrate to provide further long-term small fly control. These products coat the organic debris areas in which flies may breed and develop, essentially making them “toxic areas” for the fly larvae (maggots) and other pests such as cockroaches, which may feed on them. The IGR action breaks the life cycle and / or reduces their chances of becoming functional adult flies (i.e., capable of reproduction). This type of combined treatment is also effective for cracks and crevices in walls or tile grout, the undersides and wheel casings of equipment, or even un-cleaned floor mats where organic food particles may collect.
Key Steps in Small Fly Management- Correct fly identification
- Detailed inspection identifying source / site of infestation
- Identifying conditions conducive and an action plan to eliminate them
- Treatment options:
- Organic cleaners with foam and residual products like Nibor D or Boractin and IGR
- Residual liquid application
- ILTs and other fly traps as a monitoring tool and for trapping flying adults
- Ultra Low Volume (ULV) in special cases
- Documentation, communication, and follow-up
- Continue the cycle
